Designing Interventions to Meet the Needs of Diverse Readers

COURSE OVERVIEW:

The focus of this professional development course is to increase the knowledge base of special education elementary educators by helping them understand and integrate current reading research and theory into their daily literacy practices. This course will focus on understanding how students learn to read, the essential practices of effective literacy instruction and analyzing assessment data to inform small group instruction. The Massachusetts 2011 Curriculum Frameworks will be used throughout the course to ensure that students are learning reading skills and strategies outlined in the State Standards. Course readings, discussions and projects will include the following topics: proficient reader research, Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, analyzing assessment data to plan instruction and effective lesson design for small groups.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Understand the essential elements of effective small group instruction Learn the strategies outlined in the proficient reader research Analyze assessment data to plan small group instruction Develop effective small group lessons Understand how to coordinate RTI intervention instruction Plan school based professional learning community meetings


CREDIT:

This is a 24-hour 2-credit course with additional site-based demonstration teaching. Participants can receive 2 graduate credits from Framingham State if interested. Framingham State Graduate credits cost $75.00 per credit. Participants must register with Framingham State College. Participants will also receive 24 PDPs for this professional development course work.


CLASS PARTICIPANTS:

This course is designed for teachers in grades one through six. The maximum number of participants for course registration is 40 participants

CLASS REQUIREMENTS:
Actively participate in class discussions Complete readings and final product Attend all summer sessions Actively participate in small group inquiry circles Have some fun.
FINAL PRODUCT:
Please complete four out of eight assignments listed below:
Use assessment data to document the growth of one student Write a reflection about a practice you changed Analyze student assessment data and plan a small group lesson—or conference Use classroom assessment data (both informal and formal) to organize small group instruction lesson—or conference Write 3 lesson plans for teaching comprehension strategies Write 3 lesson plans for teaching decoding strategies Create a videotape of a small group lesson. A product of your choice – Approval by facilitator required
GRADING:
Assignment 1 – 20% of total grade Assignment 2 – 20% of total grade Assignment 3 – 20% of total grade Assignment 4 – 20% of total grade Class participation and discussions of readings - 20%
