Program of Studies Extension 2009.2010

MATH
Life Skills Math
The course is designated for those students who struggle with the basic math concepts; who may not have retained information from the previous year; require a lengthy review; and more structured instruction within the classroom. More manipulatives and real life adaptations are utilized in the instruction of this course. These students are instructed on life skills math abilities and preparation for real world applications.

Pre-Algebra
In this course, students will gain understanding of various ways of representing numbers; identifying and describing relationships among numbers and number systems; understanding the meaning of operations and how they relate to one another; compute fluently and make reasonable estimates; determine measurements by using appropriate techniques, tools and formulas; analyze data by using appropriate statistical measurements. The students will also be presented with materials in preparation for the math track sequential course, Algebra. Topics covered, aligned to the Massachusetts State Frameworks, are, but not limited to :
Whole numbers Number Theory Fractions Decimals Percents Ratio and proportions Metric and Customary Measurements Graphs

Algebra
The course is designated for students to review pre-algebraic concepts and continue to advance their mathematical skills. In Algebra class, students will understand patterns, relations, and functions; how to represent and analyze mathematical situations and structure using algebraic symbols. Topics covered, aligned to the Massachusetts State Frameworks, are, but not limited to :
Linear Equalities/Inequalities Exponential Equations Polynomials Factoring Trinomials Quadratic Equation Rational Expressions Square Roots/Radicals/Complex Numbers Quadratic Formula Relations/Functions/and Slope

Geometry
The course will provide a basic understanding of Geometrical concepts. Students will be able to analyze characteristics and properties of two and three dimensional geometrical shapes and develop mathematical arguments of geometric relationships. They will apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations. Students will utilize text and hands on manipulatives to reinforce the content. Topics covered, aligned to the Massachusetts State Frameworks, are, but not limited to :
Points/lines/angles Parallel lines and transversals Triangles and quadrilateral Congruent Triangles The Pythagorean Theory Perimeter and Area Circles/Spheres
