SCOAP Program Curriculum


Content Area: Science and Technology/Engineering***
Students will develop skills in the areas of Science and Technology/Engineering through these courses of study
Earth and Space Science
This may include topics in :
Energy in the Earth System, such as observing and describing weather conditions (i.e. wind, temperature, precipitation); identifying the appropriate tool to be used for collection for specific data; relating pictures of objects to words “hot”/“cold”; observing and describing the temperatures of various objects (hot, warm, cool, cold); explaining the differences in the seasons; recording temperature changes of an object over time

Biology
This may include topics in :
Cell biology and Biochemistry, such as identifying and explaining how foods can be classified as starches (carbohydrates), fats (lipids), and proteins Anatomy and Physiology, such as identifying and describing the purpose, function, and steps in the process of one or more of the following systems-digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous, muscular/skeletal; identifying each major organ and its function and purpose for a given system Heredity, such as identifying differences in appearance within a species; explaining that genes are passes from parent to offspring; explain/describe how DNA is structured in a cell; giving examples to demonstrate that some genes are stronger (dominant) and some are weaker (recessive), making certain traits more or less likely to appear in offspring

Technology/Engineering
This may include topics in :
Materials, Tools and Machines, such as identifying common hand tools and what they are used for; identifying common power tools and what they are used for; identifying measurement devices and what they are used for; demonstrating and/or describing proper use of simple tools; identifying materials according to a characteristic (hard, soft, flexible Communication, such as identifying communication as the ways in which people and animals exchange information; identifying that communication can occur through verbal exchanges, as well as in writing (directions) and visually (pictures, sign language); identifying tools that help people communicate with one another (i.e. telephone, newspaper, Internet, etc) Fluid Systems, such as identifying transportation as moving a person from point A to point B; identifying how a person could get from point A to point B (i.e. walk, take a bike, car); identifying different means of transportation (i.e. boats, cars, rockets); identifying whether different means of transportation operate on land, on water, in the air, or in space
